Trump vows to 'do everything' for Mideast peace

U.S. President Donald Trump (L) shakes hands with Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas during a meeting at the presidential palace in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on May 23, 2017.

Speaking hours after having met Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Bethlehem, the president declared that "the Palestinians are ready to reach for peace".

Trump will then travel back to Jerusalem to visit Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and deliver a speech at the Israel Museum.

Prime Minister Netanyahu was one of the first world leaders to visit the United States after President Trump's inauguration and today's visit is one more step the President has taken to reaffirm the bond of friendship between the United States and Israel.

The US president was greeted by diplomats and dignitaries as he arrived at at Ben-Gurion International Airport for a two-day visit of Israel and Palestine, following his visit to Saudi Arabia.

And in Israel, her husband, Mr Jared Kushner, stuck by his father-in-law's side as US President Donald Trump pushed for peace in the Middle East.

The visit raised questions about whether the USA would indicate the site is Israeli territory.

The status of Jerusalem is ultra-sensitive and has been among the most hard issues in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

On Monday, Mr Trump stressed the strong bonds between the USA and Israel. The Palestinian premier also said he was willing to work with Trump to advance the peace process.

"I will call them, from now on, losers".

The US has never recognised Israeli sovereignty over the territory occupied, including east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want to make the capital of a future independent state.

"Just so you understand, I never mentioned the word or the name Israel", Trump told reporters about the exchange after a day of trips to religious sites.

While past United States presidents have set out broad principles both sides must meet in order to reach a peace deal, Trump has resisted laying out any clear guidelines, instead promising to act as a mediator and urging both sides to take steps toward peace.

"I am committed to trying to achieve a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians and I intend to do everything I can to help them achieve that goal", he said, with the 50th anniversary of Israel's capture of territories that Palestinians seek for a state approaching next month. For the first time, a US President went to the Western Wall.

"I've heard it's one of the toughest deals of all, but I have a feeling that we're going to get there eventually, I hope", Trump said on Monday night. "Let's see if we can prove them wrong". Trump heads next to Europe, where planned meetings with world leaders on the economy and trade could be overtaken with discussion of terrorism and security.

In a statement Tuesday, Islamic Jihad also said that it rejected Trump's comments.

It's a mindset that could help to coax Netanyahu, a man who has always been saying that Israel is building connections with some Arab states and who strongly believes that any deal would need a regional element, to talk seriously about peace.
