Trump keeps his promises scrapping climate deal

President Trump has repeatedly called climate change a hoax. The Washington Post's Philip Rucker asked Pruitt.

The official then added, with a tinge of annoyance: "Can we stay on topic, please?"

Asked about CEOs' criticism of the US withdrawal, White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Friday said some companies that expressed support for remaining in the agreement raised concerns about the emissions reduction targets.

Mr Pruitt cited figures on carbon emissions reduction for the 2000 to 2014 period, spanning the previous Obama administration, but noted that the U.S. did this through "innovation and technology, not government mandate". They have declared that Paris is an essential accord and that climate action is not stoppable. "Just the opposite - we are forging ahead", he said in a statement Thursday shortly after the president moved to leave the deal.

Northwestern University has signed an open letter to the worldwide community to endorse actions being taken at the state and local levels to address climate change in support of the Paris Agreement.

Baker and Scott wrote to Energy Secretary Rick Perry last month urging the Trump administration to remain in the pact, and Perry was reportedly one of the officials who advised the president not to withdraw.

Trump however argued that the Paris deal puts the U.S. at a disadvantage, adding he would leave the door open for negotiating a better deal for USA businesses and workers. Importantly, it is also out of step with what is happening in the United States.

Yet, despite his decision to leave the Paris Agreement, Trump would stick to the four-year-long withdrawal process stipulated by the Paris Agreement, which means that the USA withdrawal won't take effect till November 2020, about two months away from the end of his first term.

Helping smaller economy countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia grow through through a cleaner energy mix will reduce emissions and limit global warming while pushing richer countries to curb their own emissions.

"When we joined Paris, the rest of the world applauded. because it put this country at disadvantage", Pruitt told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday".

Tech heavyweights such as Apple, Google, Intel and Microsoft are among the hundreds of businesses that on Monday declared their intention to continue working toward reducing carbon emissions. They are already a leader in solar panel production.

The letter is called "We Are Still In" - as in, still in the Paris Accord.

"We can not protect America's interest without a seat at the table, so San Diego will continue to lead on environmental protection", Faulconer tweeted. After all, we're the United States.

The meeting ended with a joint statement pledging full implementation of the Paris deal, committing China and the European Union to cutting back on fossil fuels, developing more green technology and helping raise $100bn (R1.3 trillion) per year by 2020 to help poorer countries reduce their high-polluting emissions.

Two Republican governors, Phil Scott of Vermont and Charlie Baker of MA, have joined the otherwise Democratic-led group of states.

After President Trump announced the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord, former New York City mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg pledged $15 million to help the country fulfill its climate commitments.

"Well, frankly, George, I think the whole question is an effort of trying to get it off the point", Pruitt said. Trump said he's willing to renegotiate and re-enter the agreement when he believes it better serves the interests of Americans.
