Northam wins Democratic nomination for governor

Virginia primary to help gauge US political mood under Trump

In Fauquier County, Prince William County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart won the Republican Party primary for governor as results from around the state continued to be tabulated to determine the ultimate victor.

Both contests feature established candidates with lengthy political careers facing off against insurgent, populist candidates hoping to upset the power bases of their respective parties.

Northam, 57-year-old pediatric neurologist from Norfolk with a genteel nature cultivated on the rural Eastern Shore, led Perriello by 55.93 percent to 44.07 percent with almost 58 percent of precincts reporting, ending Perriello's bid to jump the Democratic establishment's planned line of succession with a more ambitiously left-wing economic agenda.

While Northam has been ever present in Virginia's Democratic politics for a decade, Gillespie remained behind the scenes in Republican politics for close to 20 years before giving U.S. Sen. She's said her top priorities would be creating jobs and making Virginia more economically competitive.

In the Republican gubernatorial race, less than 5,000 votes separated eventual victor Ed Gillespie from Corey Stewart, who finished second.

It hasn't been easy. GOP voter Don Shanklin showed that support by casting a ballot for Trump's former Virginia campaign manager Corey Stewart for governor.

Gillespie basically ignored his competition, including the flame-throwing Stewart, and the strategy seemed to work.

However, Gillespie started to widen his lead as more Northern Virginia precincts started to report. The third candidate, Frank Wagner, kept both of them at bay in his native Hampton Roads region. Frank Wagner, struggled to gain traction, despite winning the endorsement of The Washington Post's editorial board.

Democrats in Virginia go to the polls today to choose their nominee for governor, but their choice may also help settle simmering tensions in the party that are distracting from its attempts to resist United States president Donald Trump's agenda. By comparison, about 362,000 people cast ballots in the Republican race. But the stats, so far, look promising for the Democratic party and LGBTQ folks who will benefit from their inclusive policies. Tom Perriello, as nominee for governor. Gillespie focused his campaign on taxes, business regulations, and economic growth and hit those themes in his victory speech.

In the most crowded Democratic primary, four candidates faced off for the chance to take on Del. Northam also had a larger, steadier stream of in-state donors, while Perriello was funded largely by $500,000 contributions from George Soros and Charlottesville philanthropist Sonjia Smith.

Many voters, though, flocked to Northam because of his experience in the General Assembly as a state senator and lieutenant governor. Mark Warner, while Sanders and Sen.

Northam - a doctor by trade who served in the U.S. Army - has served as the state's lieutenant since 2014.

That show of support should matter to the politically tuned-in primary electorate. Still, Perriello touted his good relations with the popular former president, using video from the old re-election rally in a series of ads. He's now running a TV ad that features Massachusetts Sen. She beat Mavis Taintor in the Democratic primary and will run against incumbent David LaRock in the fall. Sanders and Warren have formally endorsed Perriello in this race, though Obama has not.

COLLINSVILLE-A handful of votes made the difference in primary elections Tuesday night, with low turnouts reported all over the commonwealth.

In the Republican race, Gillespie enjoyed a huge fundraising advantage against Stewart and state Sen. Regardless of who wins, Virginia is voting for progressive candidates who supports a $15 minimum wage and free community college. Trump is not only a polarizing figure, but Virginia was one of the few swing states he lost.

Many Republican voters admitted that they saw their vote as a way to support President Donald Trump.

Stewart's unexpectedly strong showing shocked Republicans at Gillespie's party at a Hilton Hotel ballroom in the Richmond suburbs, where supporters who had expected a blow-out were concerned to see Stewart running a close second.
