Zach Johnson making an early move at Erin Hills

Paul Casey made a mess of the par-5 14th hole Friday at Erin Hills but then he recovered nicely

But only for a couple minutes.

Spieth shot a 4-under 76 in a third round that ended with a double bogey on the par-5 18th.

There are more red numbers on the leaderboard than on a Las Vegas roulette table, which goes against just about everything America's national golf championship is supposed to be about. "You can have a really fast start and just get up the leaderboard, and you never know what can happen".

A women's advocacy group will protest the USGA's decision to hold this year's U.S. Women's Open at a Donald Trump-owned golf course by flying a banner over the men's U.S. Open on Saturday in Erin, Wisconsin.

But in the previous two US Opens, Johnson added life to what is traditionally golf's toughest and often most drama-free major.

The former Georgia golfer is the leader at the 2017 U.S. Open going into Sunday after firing a 67 on Saturday. -Thomas on the meaning of his record-setting 63.

What a day for Justin Thomas.

That Thomas, who earlier his season shot a round of 59 in Hawaii, became the fifth player in US Open history to sign for a 63 - finishing with an eight footer for eagle on the last hole - indicated more than anything that any one of a number of players can still have realistic hopes of winning.

Fiji's Vijay Singh also recorded a seven-under 63, at Olympia Fields in 2003. Kubly, whose company has built or renovated scores of world-class golf courses (including U.S. Open hosts Southern Hills and Torrey Pines) and whose daughter remembers trips to visit with pros-turned-course designers such as Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus, has experience in that area.

The American's phenomenal display earned a record that had belonged to Johnny Miller ever since the latter compiled an eight-under final round to win at Oakmont in 1973.

Harman, bidding to become the first left-hander to win a US Open, is a victor on the PGA Tour this year while Thomas is the world number 13, a three-time victor this season and a member of the exclusive "59" club after breaking 60 at the Sony Open this year. Or at your home course.

He clawed that back with a birdie on the 12th, draining a six-foot putt but was soon in trouble on the 13th, three-putting for bogey. He was 10 under, only two shots behind.

Germany's Martin Kaymer, victor in 2014, took 41 shots to complete the front nine and although he picked up two birdies on the back nine, his three-over 75 saw him drop back to level par.

The bogey save on 18 certainly changed his day. The other lefty, the little one, lowercase "L", all 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds of him.

Casey also had a triple bogey on No. 14 in the second round, but he finished with a 1-under 71 and a share of the 36-hole lead. Brian Harman, 30, has won twice in his PGA Tour career, including last month at the Wells Fargo Championship.

In the final round at Oakmont a year ago, his golf ball moved slightly as he positioned himself for a short putt on the fifth hole.

Reed is tied with Charley Hoffman and Tommy Fleetwood for the lead at 8 under.

Those are words rarely uttered at a U.S. Open.

He gave back a stroke on four when his drive went into the right fescue and his second shot was over the green. "A 40-year-old - I'm just being factual here - with what I've done, I'm not making decisions based on dollars".
