Koepka in control and with a 1-shot lead at US Open

Fleetwood, who was hoping to follow in the footsteps of 1970 victor Tony Jacklin and 2013 champion Justin Rose, held a share of second place on 11 under par alongside Americans Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas.

"Anytime you've seen the golf courses, U.S. Open venues, work back towards even par, there are complaints".

Koepka's 16-under mark tied Rory McIlroy's previous finishing-score record set at Congressional in 2011.

Third-round leader Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama finished tied for second, four shots back.

"I'm glad the fairways were wide, but there were some really hard holes out there, and I'm glad I played as well as I did", he said. Not that I'm an old man by any means, but I'm 30.

Henderson won twice a year ago, taking the KPMG Women's PGA Championship for her first major, and successfully defending her title in the Cambia Portland Classic.

"It gives you a good grounding", Fleetwood said. "To me, what makes a great golf course is you can shoot 66 and you can shoot 78 just as easily. It was windy and he shot five under, fair play". "Stay aggressive", became the mantra he used to Koepka throughout.

"It's unbelievable, " Koepka said.

That made it academic, despite Harman's best efforts to keep up. "It was kind of by accident". And for a player who took that most un-American of decisions to develop his game elsewhere - in his case on the PGA European Tour - the American's homecoming party was all the sweeter for the hugely impressive way he fashioned victory in this 117th US Open at Erin Hill.

However, a rare wild drive at 12 led to his first bogey in 27 holes and another dropped shot at the next effectively ended his hopes of becoming the first left-handed U.S. Open champion.

Stricker, a native son who lives in nearby Madison, was vociferously cheered at every tee box and green all week. But back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 caused him to slip while Koepka was surging ahead.

"It was bombs away", he said. "To be honest, I'm not a big golf nerd." he added. On 10 I hit a poor putt - not enough speed - and missed for par.

"Obviously the wind picked up and I felt like that played right into my hand", said Koepka, who considers himself a good ball-striker and good putter.

"To go over there, I think it helped me grow up a little bit and really figure out that, hey, play golf, get it done, and then you can really take this somewhere", he said.

On joining the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as a US Open victor, he added: "To be in the same category as some of the guys on this trophy is unbelievable".

Koepka, playing the back nine first, birdied four of his first seven holes. Brian Harman was a stroke behind and a hole back, while players such as Tommy Fleetwood and Rickie Fowler stayed in the hunt.

Koepka shot 3-under on the front nine to put him at 14-under for the weekend, which established him as the favorite for much of the final round. Fowler's 10 under was only good for a fifth-place tie.

"If you look at the negatives too much, you're going to be stuck doing that the whole time", he reasoned.

"We're breaking down all kinds of barriers", Harman quipped.

Summerhays will continue his current string of eight straight tour events, including the U.S. Open, with two more stops.
