Portugal vs. Russia in Confederations Cup

Portugal players celebrate their victory

"I think the team played very well".

"I'll be frank, I don't think they are appropriate".

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said his team deserved their point but admitted there was work to be done going forward. "He will prepare us and give us a gameplan that we will try to execute".

It was Russia's worst-ever defeat - a record which still stands - and the feeling of national humiliation soon led to younger players being given a chance.

After a stellar season for Real Madrid, which saw Ronaldo win La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, the attacker is chasing more silverware at the Confederations Cup.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos spoke out about the new system in the wake of his side's draw, calling it "confusing." The team played very well against a side playing at home with the support of their fans. It was an interesting game, speedy.

"What fans have been waiting for over so many years is finally happening".

Portugal drew their opening Group A game 2-2 with Mexico on Sunday and will target a victory against the host nation at Spartak Stadium. The Euro 2016 winners took the lead on 34 minutes when Ronaldo sprinted into the box and his beautifully-timed pass found Quaresma unmarked in the area.

"Cris will be a friend for life", he said.

It took just eight minutes for the four-time Ballon d'Or victor to put his nation ahead thanks to some build-up play from Bernardo Silva and Raphael Guerreiro.

However, the win was bittersweet as Portugal left-back Raphael Guerreiro was hospitalized with a suspected leg fracture.

"We also have experienced, talented players who have played football around the world. We have four points and we have to congratulate the team".

- These sides have met 10 times previously with Portugal winning half of those encounters and Russian Federation winning three times (D2).

Against Russia, however, it was the Ronaldo show for Portugal because of those around him as much as it was down to his own efforts.

"We have to win, because if we win the next game, we will be one step away from qualifying (for the semi-finals)".

The 32-year-old netted the only goal of the game to help the European champions to victory in Moscow, beating goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev from close range early on. The first goal in the match was scored on 8th minute into the Russian net by Christiano Ronaldo, who is the captain of the Portuguese side and is now considered the world's top footballer.
