Devils on the clock with No. 1 pick in NHL draft

Marc-Andre Fleury is congratulated by Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley after being drafted by the Knights during the NHL Expansion Draft at T Mobile Arena on Wednesday

And while Vegas was playing with a stacked deck, the Golden Knights won big in a lot of them.

The Expansion Draft was somewhat awkwardly sandwiched between announcements in the NHL Awards show, with groups of picks being revealed by owner Bill Foley and general manager George McPhee during breaks in the hardware being handed out.

The Vegas Golden Knights announced their full roster during the NHL Awards in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, filling a roster with at least one player from all 30 current teams.

"We're going to put our team together and we'll watch it come to life in front of us", McPhee said.

Stanley Cup-winning goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, defensemen Marc Methot and Alexei Emelin, 30-goal scorer Jonathan Marchessault and forwards David Perron and James Neal are among the veterans selected by the Golden Knights in the National Hockey League expansion draft Wednesday night. They now have 13 draft picks for the upcoming draft, including three in the first and three in the second. The three-time Cup victor lost his starting job with the back-to-back champion Penguins, but he'll get to start over in the desert with two years on his contract.

Fleury, who turns 33 in November, played 13 seasons for Pittsburgh and holds Penguins records for games played (691), minutes played (39,769), wins (375) and shutouts (44).

Goaltender Marc-André Fleury of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins was the most prominent player joining Vegas.

"But it's something I definitely knew would eventually come". "That was a warm welcome. I don't get to see them as much as the scouts and I really try to pay deference to the scouts".

Colorado goalie Calvin Pickard was the first player McPhee announced as a Golden Knight. He was followed by 27-year-old Vancouver Canucks defenseman Luca Sbisa, Arizona forward Teemu Pulkkinen and New Jersey Devils defenseman Jon Merrill. The Knights added two more first round picks - both in this year's draft and in the top 15 - as well as four second round picks, one third rounder, and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of the upcoming four drafts.

Nine former WHL players were selected by the newest NHL franchise, Vegas Golden Knights, at tonight's NHL Awards ceremony.

Marchessault, who is signed for another season at just $750,000, posted 30 goals and 51 points for the Panthers last season.

The picks included defensemen Trevor van Riemsdyk and Brayden McNabb, forward Oscar Lindberg.

In Las Vegas, Fleury will be reunited with expansion defenseman Deryk Engelland (Calgary Flames), who played for the Penguins from 2009-14.

New York Islanders: Vegas General Manager George McPhee chose to pay back his old boss in New York's Garth Snow by fleecing him.

Columbus did what it needed to do to protect forward Josh Anderson, defenseman Jack Johnson and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, but at a cost of the team's 2017 first-round pick (24th overall) and a 2019 second-round pick.

Winnipeg hosts Toronto and Edmonton welcomes Calgary on the opening day of the 2017-18 National Hockey League regular season, while the Vegas Golden Knights play their inaugural game two nights later in Dallas. Ottawa lost Marc Methot, Erik Karlsson's defensive partner, and Karlsson was filming it on his iPhone as it was announced.

The Knights took on a pair of contracts - David Clarkson from the Blue Jackets and Mikhail Grabovski from the Islanders - that will help them get to the salary floor but little else.

Players with two or less years of professional experience in North America were also exempt, so the Sharks didn't have to make top prospects, such as Joonas Donskoi, Timo Meier and Kevin Labanc, available.

"There's no question if you're going to be successful and you're Las Vegas, you need guys that can score".

As for the impact of the expansion draft to the league, it is expected to give a major blow to the other teams. "Usually, you're talking to teams or thinking of teams and you have some sort of idea of how they're built or their history or whatever it may be, and they are completely fresh".

Vegas will play its first two games on the road, visiting Arizona on October 7 before the second leg of an early back-to-back for coach Gerard Gallant's club.
