76ers make Fultz top pick in NBA draft

Adam Silver after being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the No. 1 pick overall during the NBA basketball draft Thursday

"I'm excited for our fans and for the 76ers organization that we were able to select the top player in the NBA Draft, Markelle Fultz", managing general partner Josh Harris said in a statement released by the team.

Fultz, often compared to Houston's James Harden, missed Washington's final four games, capped by a Pac-12 Tournament loss to Southern California. The Kings entered the draft with the fifth pick, the 10th pick and the 34th pick.

"Get up and down", Fultz said recently of the Sixers' style of play. "But I'm glad at how it worked out, so I'm happy". Brooklyn Nets - Jarrett Allen 23. After using last year's top pick on big man Ben Simmons, this year the Sixers looked to the backcourt. The deal was first reported on Saturday and when it was apparent the trade was going to occur, Fultz quickly worked out for the 76ers after a short drive from Maryland. Fultz said a crispy chicken sandwich is his good-luck charm, so he was thrilled upon finding out via Google search that his new home has seven Chick-fil-As (including the one at the airport). "I knew this was happening before it was happening".

Only two seniors went in the first round - the lowest number in the modern history of the draft. Milwaukee Bucks - D.J. Wilson 18.

But the Sixers aren't counting on the Fultz-Simmons-Embiid core to simply entertain in 140-character bursts. The Lakers used their third straight No. 2 pick on Ball, who averaged 14.6 points and led the nation with 7.6 assists per game in his only season at UCLA.

The Celtics used the third pick on Duke's Jayson Tatum.

There are some obvious winners and losers: Markelle Fultz went No. 1 overall, which understandably makes him a victor, while Semi Ojeleye tumbled into the second round despite being projected as high as the mid-first round.

The 19-year-old point guard has 1.7m Instagram followers and has only been in college for a year but his father, Lavar, is one of the most outspoken people in sport.

Teams are assigned picks largely based on their win record in the previous season.

The Sacramento Kings made a decision to select a guard with the 5th pick as they chose De'Aaron Fox out of Kentucky.

The New York Knicks selected Frank Ntilikina at the eight spot, while the Dallas Mavericks selected Dennis Smith Jr. as a ninth pick.

"I mean, it's extremely gratifying for me to be in that top five, and we already knew that this was going to be a pretty tough draft and it was pretty loaded at the point guard position, and for me to be up there is just a blessing", Fox said. Another sophomore followed Kennard when Donovan Mitchell was selected out of Louisville by Denver at No. 13, but was then dealt to Utah in a trade that sent Trey Lyles to Denver.

Bam Adebayo was the last lottery pick; he went 14th to Miami, joining n Fox and Monk in the National Basketball Association.

Portland picked Jackson at No. 15.

The Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off the biggest surprise, and traded for Jimmy Butler. The Kings got two picks out of it - and took Justin Jackson and Harry Giles. Oklahoma City Thunder - Terrance Ferguson 22. The Magic traded the rights to Webber to the Golden State Warriors for the rights to Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway. Portland Trail Blazers - Caleb Swanigan 27.

White spent three years at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, which is a feeder school to the University of Colorado.

Below are the picks from the second round.
