North Korea denies torturing American detainee Otto Warmbier

Kim Jong Un the leader of North Korea

Warmbier was freed after the U.S. State Department's special envoy on North Korea, Joseph Yun, traveled to Pyongyang and demanded the student's release on humanitarian grounds, capping a flurry of diplomatic contacts, a U.S. official has said.

Throngs of mourners paid their final respects to Otto Warmbier Thursday at a public funeral at the high school he attended near Cincinnati.

Portman was quoted as telling reporters that Warmbier was an "amazing young man" and North Korea must be held accountable for his death.

Warmbier, 22, was arrested while visiting the reclusive country as a tourist.

United States doctors said Mr Warmbier had suffered a severe neurological injury from an unknown cause.

KCNA says the North dealt with Warmbier according to domestic law and worldwide standards.

Refuting these accusations, an unnamed spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry told KCNA that painting such a defamatory portrait of North Korea will only lead the country to harshen treatment for foreign detainees in the future.

The response did not include any details about what caused Warmbier to fall into a coma or other details about how he was treated during his detention.

In the days following his death, North Korea's state media claimed Warmbier's death was a "mystery", according to CNN.

"This pattern of brain injury is usually seen as result of cardiopulmonary arrest where blood supply to the brain is inadequate for a period of time, resulting in the death of brain tissue", Dr. Daniel Kanter said last week.

"Those who have absolutely no idea about how well we treated Warmbier under humanitarian conditions dare to utter "mistreatment" and "torture". The agent, Chris Volo, said he believes Rodman's trips to North Korea "had a lot to do" with Warmbier's release. He said North Korea's treatment of Warmbier demonstrated "a basic disregard for human rights, for human dignity".

Warmbier was buried yesterday in OH, less than a week after he was sent back home in a mysterious coma. South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in an interview with CBS earlier this week that it was clear North Korea bears a heavy responsibility for Warmbier's death. Trump, who frequently denounced China on the campaign trail, has turned to Beijing to help pressure its ally North Korea, prompting concern among Asian partners that America might go easy on Beijing over its expansive claims in the disputed South China Sea.

Pyongyang said Warmbier contracted botulism, a rare illness that causes paralysis, after his trial, and had been in a coma since he was given a sleeping pill.

A negotiator involved in Warmbier's release said his Jewishness was hidden as a tactic because he was accused by Pyongyang of acting on behalf of the United Methodist Church.
