Family affair: Lakers grab Lonzo Ball with 2nd overall pick

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

As expected, LaVar Ball was a very happy man that the Los Angeles Lakers selected his son and UCLA prospect Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 overall pick in Thursday night's National Basketball Association draft.

Los Angeles is aiming to play in a uptempo offense that Ball has excelled in at both in college with UCLA and high school at Chino Hills high school.

Enter LaVar Ball, the father of newly minted L.A. Lakers draft pick Lonzo Ball.

"I gotta ask. Does LaVar and Lonzo ... does the talent and the mouthpiece, does that all stem from you", the stranger asked, to which Grandpa Ball answered with a smile, "Yes it does".

Lonzo Ball puts on a cap as he approaches the stage after being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers as the No. 2 pick overall during the NBA basketball draft, Thursday, June 22, 2017, in NY.

"He really rose up on the draft board", said ESPN analyst Jay Bilas on the ESPN broadcast.

When did he have that made?

Ball, a Chino Hills native who entered the draft after one year at UCLA, was selected by the Lakers at No. 2 in the National Basketball Association draft on Thursday.

How would he make that happen?

That explains why the Lakers drafted Ball to be their point guard, but not why they didn't try to pair him with Russell in the back court. "You would imagine most fans are behind him".

The Lakers have missed the playoffs for four straight seasons, the longest postseason drought in franchise history, and posted the league's third-worst record last season at 26-56.

Believe in the young players, the Lakers said.

After that bit of serendipity, the Lakers made their plans for Ball well-known earlier this week when they agreed to trade point guard D'Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets.

"My dad loved him and loved the way the Lakers played". They selected two big men and one backcourt piece.

An NCAA champion and a consensus 2016-17 first team All-American, Hart comes to Los Angeles with an impressive resume. "How he can enhance and make your team better".

Those words cut deep and the purple and gold plasma flowed.

THEIR TIME TO SHINE: With so much trade speculation about All-Stars such as Paul George and Jimmy Butler, there hasn't been as much focus as usual leading into Thursday on the players who are in the draft. Never truly seized control of this city's wanting basketball imagination.

Lonzo isn't known as a scorer like Markelle Fultz, but his overall stats in Los Angeles could help him win the award.

Magic Johnson vs. Jerry West? It's anyone's guess at this point, but that doesn't mean we can't try to figure it out based on what we now know.

"There's just a renewed energy around here", Pelinka said Thursday night. The Lakers figure to be interested in all of them. Fans accustomed to championship are exhausted of losing.
