Obama: 'Fundamental Meanness At The Core' Of GOP Health Care Bills

During a downtown rally Friday morning, a group opposed to repealing the Affordable Care Act described the Senate's proposed replacement as "mean", playing off previous remarks President Trump made about the House bill. In fact, the cuts to Medicaid are even worse than in the AHCA.

The bill was hashed out behind closed doors, a process that's dismayed many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, according to The Takeaway's Washington correspondent, Todd Zwillich.

The House bill would "save taxpayers money" - if they were already rich. This press conference may have been Heller laying claim to one of the two lifeboats that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can spare in order to get to 50 votes.

The Congressional Budget Office is expected to release its score of the bill early next week, estimating how many millions of Americans stand to lose their insurance. Critics of the bill say those increases will not keep up with rising health care costs. Sen. The estimate was released Friday by Arizona's Medicaid agency, which analyzed the effects of the legislation on the state health insurance program for low-income people. "That's the broad outline of this plan". And it would end the tax penalties under Obama's law on people who don't buy insurance - the so-called individual mandate - and on larger companies that don't offer coverage to their employees.

"Fewer people will qualify [for the tax credits]", Zwillich says. Under the House bill, tax credits would be based primarily on age.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, which represents health insurers covering more than 100 million people in the USA, said it will continue to push for a replacement for Obamacare's coverage requirement as well. Fixing the bill to save Medicaid's expansion theoretically wouldn't convince any of them to change their vote, while further cuts could alienate other so-called "moderate" Republicans like Heller.

"This current draft doesn't get the job done", Cruz told reporters.

"Medicaid is being cut - Sen".

"Obamacare is a direct attack on the middle class, and Americans deserve better than its failing status quo", McConnell, R-Ky, warned in a floor speech Thursday. He said the state's uninsured rate declined from 23% before the Affordable Care Act to 11 or 12% afterward.

Trump later criticized the House bill privately as "mean" and this week called for a health plan "with heart".

"We are encouraged that the draft Senate legislation funds cost-sharing reductions, which help those who need it most", BCBSA said in a statement.
