Trump's remarks, made during a White House lunch, were a surprising critique of the House measure whose passage he lobbied for and praised.

President Donald Trump told Texas Sen.

Senate Republicans are adamant about repealing the surtax and have offered $110 million in additional education funding, though they are vague about the source of this money.

Trump had not publicly criticized the House bill previously.

The group of 13 senators that Trump invited to lunch includes Republicans from both ideological camps: moderate Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski were on the list, as well as conservative Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.

The president's comments come weeks after the independent Congressional Budget Office projected that 23 million more Americans would be uninsured by 2028 under the House Republican healthcare plan.

Asked if he'd seen details of the Senate GOP health care bill, Johnson said no.

The Senate health-care bill represents the most immediate threat.

Trump's lunch on Tuesday included a number of more moderate Republicans, including Sens.

Johnson said he is "curious" what will be in the bill, before telling reporters "it's not a good process".

According to a conservative Senate aide, Trump told the lawmakers "we need to be more generous". "I'm exhausted of Republicans promising they would repeal Obamacare and then negotiating to keep it".

During his election campaign, Mr Trump consistently criticised President Obama's healthcare policy, vowing to "repeal and replace" the legislation.

The House of Representatives last month passed, by a margin of just a single "yes" vote, the American Health Care Act, the Republican-backed bill to reform Obamacare.

Democrats are ripping Republicans for keeping the bill under wraps.

The failure led to a new version of the bill allowing states to opt out of several of its provisions, and allow higher premiums for some patients.

In an attempt to avoid the heavy backlash and ensure disagreements in the conference don't spill out into plain - as was the case in the House GOP's fight over the American Health Care Act - the Republican Senate majority is crafting the bill largely behind closed doors. "We'll come out with a real bill, not Obamacare, and the results are going to be fantastic. and everybody's going to be happy". "From day one, I said we are going to repeal and replace Obamacare". Patty Murray, D-Wash., that the Senate panel hold a hearing and take testimony on a health care plan that the GOP is writing in secret.

Stefanie Miller of Height Securities said in a research note that it's likely the Senate's bill would be more generous with tax credits and other support for older Americans.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly wants to have a vote on the bill before the week-long July 4 recess. The House bill withdrew federal funds from Planned Parenthood directly but gave states the option of giving federally allocated monies to the abortion provider.
