White House paints Handel win as Trump triumph

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in a press conference.

Georgia's special election wasn't the only Republican victory Tuesday night. Crowley chairs the House Democratic Caucus, and he says it's important to remember that Democrats in those four races were trying to flip Republican strongholds, districts handpicked by the White House as President Trump tapped members of Congress to serve in his administration.

That had Pelosi's Democratic critics rekindling their calls for new faces atop the party caucus, warning that Democrats could squander their chances of retaking the House majority in next year's midterm elections.

The response from some: It better be.

The apparent effectiveness of that messaging suggested to some that the 77-year-old Californian could be a liability for Democrats as they aim to regain their majority.

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, who unsuccessfully challenged Pelosi in House leadership elections held after the November election, said that even talented candidates can not overcome "the toxicity of the national Democratic brand".

Ossoff initially campaigned on a promise to "make Trump furious" but more recently refrained from taking on the president as he tried to win over centrist voters.

"I think you'd have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with Pelosi at the top", Texas congressman Filemon Vela told Politico.

And Rep. Tim Ryan criticized Pelosi along with his party's brand and its outreach to voters.

"NAPKIN MATH: Ossoff raised $23.6 million to make a symbolic run against President Trump, most of it from Marin County, California and Martha's Vineyard in MA". Ralph Norman (R) defeated Democrat Archie Parnell in a special election for South Carolina's 5th Congressional District, a seat previously held by Trump's budget director, Mick Mulvaney.

And that's just bad strategy. "They keep winning and we keep losing".

Ossoff - a DC insider and documentary maker - was a really weak first-time candidate. And you know what?

All the special elections held this year have seen big swings to Democrats, but no seats have changed hands since the November general election. She indicated Thursday that those members who play within the system are the ones she expects to one day lead the party, not the representatives complaining about her leadership.

She is a prodigious Democratic fundraiser and consummate legislative tactician with loyal allies across the ideological spectrum of the party, and is in no real danger of loosing her leadership post, at least at the moment.

President Donald Trump earlier Thursday even tweeted he'd like her to stick around.

But Pelosi continues to command great loyalty from many in the House, and she insisted her position was not in jeopardy.

"I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out". "We've seen her run circles around (former House Speaker) John Boehner and get things done that nobody thought Democrats could do in the minority".

"I am not going to Monday morning quarterback on Jon Ossoff's race, which was a remarkable race, an incredible gain from where the last Republican that ran was 22 points up, and we were two points lower than 50 percent, in a race that was not supposed to ever even be feasible", Orrock declared.

The result comes as relief for Republicans who had grown concerned about whether their party, buffeted by the scandals that have plagued the Republican president, could hold the seat in Georgia's sixth district, which became the most expensive congressional race in United States history. They demonized her in 2006. "Do you think people went to the polls and said, 'Oh my God, we've got to stop Nancy Pelosi?' I don't think so", said Rep. John Larson, D-Conn.
