Oxfam ready to respond to Hurricane Irma

Miami's flyaway cranes could damage high-rises during Irma

Sailing Anarchy titled one of its stories "Just getting warmed up", because Irma, though it had passed the northernmost British Virgin Islands, was still boasting 185 miles per hour winds and beginning to blast Puerto Rico.

Yachts and cars were damaged on the half French, half-Dutch island of St. Martin/Sint Marteen, an island with a population of 75,000. The major concerns with Irma, however, are from high winds and the storm surge - when tropical weather pushes sea water onto land - Phillips said.

It's been a very active Atlantic hurricane season so far, with our first named storm, Arlene, developing before the start of hurricane season in mid-April. Irma is the most powerful hurricane in recorded history, and was approaching Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti before potentially hitting Florida, where officials have issued strongly worded warnings to residents.

"This is a national disaster", he told hosts, with most houses and roads wrecked by the storm's wind and rain.

Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the twin-island nation appears to have weathered its brush with Hurricane Irma with no deaths.

Irma is expected to make landfall in Florida over the weekend. The governors of George and SC have also signed executive orders declaring a state of emergency in their states.

Hurricane Irma continues to grind to the northwest across the U.S. Virgin Islands Wednesday evening and then near Puerto Rico on Wednesday night.

As Hurricane Irma barrels toward Florida, Puerto Rico is feeling her strength, and the storm is preventing many tourists from returning home. Similar circumstances made Hurricane Matthew so destructive in the USA and the Caribbean past year.

Katia in the Gulf of Mexico posed no threat to the U.S. but Hurricane Jose, about 1610km east of the Caribbean's Lesser Antilles islands, may threaten the USA mainland.

"This rebuilding initiative will take years", Browne told local television after a visit to the island, where he confirmed at least one person had died due to the storm. "Gov. Ricardo A. Rosselló said at a televised briefing on Wednesday that six to eight inches of rain were expected, with some areas receiving up to 12 inches".

There were widespread reports of property damage but he says the public and government had prepared well for the storm.
