Personal data about British and Canadian consumers was also compromised.

"Anybody could be affected just because social security numbers are given to every person who's a USA citizen", Tijuan Harvey said.

Equifax was aware of this catastrophic exposure of personal information July 29, but sat on news of the hack until it had full details of the breadth of the intrusion.

A major credit monitoring company admitted Thursday, Sep. He tells us in the wake of a recent Equifax data breach impacting around 140-million Americans there are four steps everyone needs to take. This massive attack proves that big corporations are vulnerable in front of hackers and that cyberecurity is a problem we are facing more and more often. The company is also involved in the collection and sale of consumer data.

To find out if you were possibly involved in the breach, Equifax set up a website to let you know if your information was possibly compromised but there has been some backlash regarding the accuracy and safety of the site. Schneiderman took issue with language on Equifax's website that asked those who signed up for the service waived their right to sue.

Equifax, one of 3 major United States credit bureaus, was hit by a high-tech heist by cyber criminals who exploited a USA website application to access files between mid-May and July of this year. Equifax is one of the three largest credit reporting agencies in the country, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This is a free service.

The Atlanta-based company disclosed the breach in a release that did not explain why it waited more than a month to warn those affected about a risk of identity theft. It said its investigation will be completed in the coming weeks.

Stephen Mayer, the Better Business Bureau marketplace manager for OR, told KOIN 6 News the first thing to do is find out if you're affected by the breach.

"Other malicious hackers are going to say there is an opportunity for us to now send out malicious emails with links that are going to pretty much drive people towards malware", Pascucci said.
