Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar Revealed

At the unveiling of the Project One, Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said "Motorsport is not an end in itself for us".

The hypercar from Mercedes is projected to arrive in 2020 and it promises a performance that is purely insane.

At the 2017 Frankfurt Motor show, Mercedes-AMG presented its Formula 1 inspired hypercar - the Project One.

As we've reported, eight Australians have already reserved a Project ONE (from a global production run of just 275) - despite the fact it will be left-hand drive and therefore won't be driveable on public roads in most Australian states. It also gets for electric motors, collectively producing a whopping 1000hp of power.

Each front wheel gets its own electric motor, allowing for insane torque vectoring, but the internal combustion engine gets two electric motors too.

The hypercar's front wheels are also powered by two further 120 kW electric motors, giving three huge benefits. It was in the late nineties when the CLK GTR, one of the most extreme supercars, came out of the Mercedes-AMG toolshed. But it actually cuts deeper than the Bugatti Chiron, as the 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) sprint takes only six seconds.

The vehicle is also equipped with a lithium ion battery pack positioned behind the front axle, which is recharged either through regenerative braking or a plug and allowing the Project One to operate in a purely electric mode.

It consists of a highly integrated and intelligently networked unit comprising one hybrid, turbocharged combustion engine with a total of four electric motors. It's making its debut in concept form at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but this is more-or-less what we'll see when it hits production next year. Go ogle this fantastic supercar in our Mercedes-Benz Project One gallery and ask yourself who will ever drive this in the all-electric mode. Instead of a rear-view mirror, for example, the Project One has a screen that shows real-time images from a mirror cam to improve visibility behind the vehicle.

The auto was launched at a Mercedes event the night before the Frankfurt motor show, where it was driven onto stage by three-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Does this vehicle really have an F1 hybrid powertrain, or is that just marketing talk? He added that their objective was to deliver a road-legal hypercar with forward-looking technology, ultimate performance and the best lap times. The petrol engine has redline of 11,000rpm, which is something unique for a car-for-the-roads.

All this insane level of power and torque is efficiently managed by the 8-speed automated manual gearbox whose seamless shifts are controlled by the paddle shifters on the F1-style steering wheel.

The ex-factory price is quoted as €2.275 million, which translates to about $3.4 million before 5 per cent import duty and GST.
