Ricciardo leads Red Bull 1-2 in Singapore

No driver has more podium finishes in Singapore than Vettel, whose impressive streak at the night race includes three straight wins from 2011-13 during his run of four straight F1 titles with former team Red Bull.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton goes into the grand prix with a slender three-point advantage over Ferrari's driver Sebastian Vettel, who has tasted victory four times in Singapore.

Despite winning at the street circuit last year, Mercedes are aware that Ferrari and Red Bull Racing will be close challengers again this year and with the Italian team showing a marked improvement in tight and twisty circuits they will be the favourites going into the race in Singapore.

"As we have pushed to become better and stronger in every area, we have put the finger in the wound in order to understand the root causes of both our good performances and the bad ones", Wolff states. What better race for Red Bull to break up the Ferrari and Mercedes show than Marina Bay?

So, despite Toto Wolff's prediction of Singapore being "more hard", for his Silver Arrows, a loss at this race could easily be mitigated over the upcoming events if Ferrari cannot stay on par.

"Hamilton tends to go very well in the second half of the season", said Sky F1's Martin Brundle. "It's important that we keep that for tomorrow but I have faith that we can perform on this level all weekend".

"In theory it should be better here than in Monza", Vettel said.

Uniquely, one of the hottest drivers on the circuit is last year's Singapore runner-up, Daniel Ricciardo. Things are coming, I'm sure they are developing their auto.

"I'm not surprised with our performance", Ricciardo said. It hasn't come close to matching the Scuderia or championship leader Mercedes for pace.

Sebastian Vettel experienced a "mixed day" of practice for the Singapore Grand Prix on Friday despite Ferrari being tipped to dominate proceedings heading into the race weekend.

Vettel struggled to find a good balance in either of the 90-minute sessions and ruined his second attempt at a low-fuel lap in FP2 on ultra-soft tyres when he clipped the wall on the exit of Turn 10.

Lewis Hamilton has been on the top of the podium twice around the Marina Bay circuit. But the 32-year-old knows Singapore could be pivotal if he wants to win his fourth world title.

"We tried a couple of things", he said.

The Silver Arrows were beaten by Ferrari in Singapore in 2015, when they had their least competitive weekend of an otherwise dominant year.

Drivers must get the timing just right as they approach at a top speed of 320 kilometers (198 miles) per hour before braking heavily down to 120 kph (74 mph).

Carlos Sainz: "After sitting out in this afternoon's FP1, I obviously had to take my time to get used to driving here in FP2 - I had to do some extra laps at the beginning to make sure I recovered the lost time". Absolutely. I think that would complete the story as well.
