Health experts say it's time for flu shots

County Health Department: 'People of all ages are advised to get vaccinated'

A change of seasons is upon us.

A puzzling study of US pregnancies found that women who had miscarriages between 2010 and 2012 were more likely to have had back-to-back annual flu shots that included protection against swine flu. "That is often a harbinger for what flu will be like this year, so I might expect a worse-than-average flu season this year".

Dr. Kim Volz, who teaches residents that end up practicing in IN and Kentucky, says anyone can get the flu, but the really young and really old are at the most risk of getting seriously sick.

Leggett, a nurse practitioner, said they have already seen at least one case of the flu this season. "The ongoing lesson is we have just got to keep trying to make sure that we are better protecting and better supporting people through better vaccines and care and support". People who normally get the nasal spray should get an injection.

So when should you get it?

"Northern Ireland rolled out the childhood vaccination programme in 2013 and has consistently had good vaccine uptake". Health officials recommend receiving the quadrivalent flu vaccine to guard against four strains of influenza this season.

For decades, tests suggested the flu vaccine worked extremely well, but in the past 15 years a better test revealed many infections in vaccinated people who would previously have been deemed protected.

Dr. Schulz says anyone from 6-months and older should get immunized.

"What it does is help prevent you from getting really sick, missing days of school, missing days of work".

"With high levels of flu activity in Australia this winter and the potential for similar here, it is more important than ever that everyone who is eligible gets vaccinated". He said it went late into the year, lasting into April. Do I need it again?

The flu is a respiratory illness caused by viruses.

"This year we are providing more than 4.5 million doses of the influenza vaccine for free to Australians", a spokesman for Mr Hunt said. That's why it also is extremely important to take other measures to keep you and yours healthy this flu season. "But it is what we found, and we have an obligation to let people know about that", said senior author of the report Dr Edward Belongia, a long-time vaccine researcher who heads the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health at Wisconsin's Marshfield Clinic.

'The vaccine can still reduce your chance of getting flu by about 20 to 60 per cent - it varies: in some years it is higher, and in other years it is lower.

Are you ready to fight the flu?

No. The vaccine is made from an inactivated virus that can not transmit infection.
