Easter eggs you missed in Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Key scenes in Kingsman: The Golden Circle filmed in Birmingham

The film, directed by Matthew Vaughn, is the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015). Vaughn and his co-writer Jane Goldman pile on big action set pieces not so much because they're necessary but simply because they can, yielding diminishing returns after the initial adrenaline rush.

"It took the Bond series 15 years and 10 movies to get to the ridiculed Moonraker".

Following the successful limited global IMAX run of its predecessor in 2015, Kingsman: The Golden Circle reunites director Matthew Vaughn with stars Colin Firth, Taron Egerton and Mark Strong, along with franchise newcomers Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges.

The original film had some spectacular gadgets but Kingsman: The Golden Circle ups the ante with even more fantastic toys.

But before Eggsy and fellow agent Merlin (Mark Strong) can begin to connect the dots that led Charlie to Kingsman headquarters, a missile barrage takes out the rest of the organization. Julianne Moore plays a '50s-obsessed drug lord who poisons the world's recreational drug users; Bruce Greenwood is the Fox News-devouring president who basically says let them all die.

"Because Elton's in the movie, I came up with the gag of 'Wednesday night's alright for fighting", Vaughn said, referencing the parody poster that accompanied Elton John's casting acknowledgement in May, "and I was thinking, a lot of people aren't gonna understand when he does that". But "Secret Service" was hobbled by a plot thread that required Firth to affectionately mentor a wayward youth called Eggsy (Taron Egerton), who was thought to have agent potential. It is up to these agents to get their hands on the anecdote and stop this mass genocide before time runs out.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens in Hong Kong today. Huge surprise for me!

Maybe fans would argue that's the point of a Kingsman movie, but there are rules to good storytelling that you break at your peril. And when it comes to some of the film's best scenes, greatest cameo and more enjoyable jokes, they beat them with a dead horse - overusing to the point they stop being amusing and start to feel like lazy writing. Particularly during the final action sequence, constant cuts back to John distract from what is otherwise a great scene and will leave audiences frustrated at his appearances breaking the flow of the film. With all of the camera tricks that the movie tries to pull off, the CGI is actually really great. While it's tantalisingly tempting to credit Moore with having stolen the show in her super-villain avatar, the film does justice to its entire star cast, with the exception of Channing Tatum. Another thing the sequel has on its predecessor is the introduction of some very interesting and quirky new characters. If you have seen the trailers, you know what I'm talking about, and probably agree with Matthew Vaughn.
