Hamilton claims pole position in Malaysia as Vettel to start from last

Bottas needs to adapt style to suit Mercedes

While an engine failure condemned Vettel to last on the grid, Hamilton, a distant sixth in Friday practice and just fourth in Q2, secured one of the most unlikely pole positions of his career with a bolt-from-the-blue lap at the start of Q3.

Vettel failed to make it back into Q1 and was thus eliminated, Ferrari were now focused on making the car faster for the main race.

Vettel was second quickest, but his Ferrari had an electrical problem late in FP3 so the crew had to install a new engine for qualifying.

Hamilton was also in the mix as well, the Brit had a slow free practice that saw him only manage fifth in the final session.

Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, said: "We had a little gremlin in our deployment mode and it was annoying, but it did not affect the car's performance".

"I'm very grateful to the team. Especially on a day where you feel that you've got it in you, you've got it in the car but unfortunately we won't be able to prove that".

Hamilton was forced to retire from a comfortable lead with a blown engine last year, just when he had been poised to jump back to the top of the overall standings.

The upgraded ICE for Qualifying was Vettel's fourth of the season - the last allowed before a demotion - while he has been on his fourth turbocharger since May's Spanish GP.

"Who knows what will happen tomorrow", Vettel told AFP. Particularly the Red Bulls had good long run pace yesterday and today I think so, I'm hoping our car has moved in the right direction for also the race run but we'll see tomorrow.

With no threat of the forecast rain, the first qualifying session was a straightforward dry-weather affair, with Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing all ambitious enough to set times using the soft rather than supersoft tyre.

The mechanics struggled to solve the issue but were unable to do so and he could take no further part in the session. "We have to get it fixed for tomorrow", said Whiting.

"Obviously we're going to have a tough battle with these guys (Ferrari and Red Bull Racing)", he said.

"At the moment the car is unbalanced and you slide all over the place, the fronts and the rears, you overheat them and then nothing goes any more".

"That's what I've always enjoyed... my first go-kart was fifth-hand or something like that, and (my dad) would say it was like a four-poster bed".

In the second part of qualifying, everything was completed for Mass and Strella (both Williams), Palmer ("Reno"), Sainz and went Out, who sat behind the wheel of the car Toro Rosso is Russian Kvyat.

The ambient temperature at the start of qualifying was 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Centigrade) and the track temperature was 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Centigrade). "It is an inspection hatch, a drain that runs all along the curb", he explained.
