Catalans go on strike over referendum violent crackdown

More than 800 people required medical attention after riot police cracked down on the banned independence referendum regional authorities said

Us Catalans have earned the right to be heard.

Spain's Justice Minister Rafael Catalá warned on Monday morning that the central government in Madrid was prepared to use its emergency powers to prevent a unilateral declaration of independence.

Barcelona asked La Liga to postpone their league meeting with Las Palmas in the afternoon - a request that was rejected.

"We were unable to get the game postponed so we made a decision to play it behind closed doors".

"If somebody tries to declare the independence of part of the territory - something that can not be done - we will have to do everything possible to apply the law", Catalá said.

Mr Cuixart said: "We are European citizens, as we are European citizens it means what we want to do is exactly like Scotland or Quebec".

A day after Spanish police beat people trying to vote in an independence referendum in Catalonia, the Polish foreign ministry urged dialogue and compromise.

More than 40 unions in Catalonia joined forces under the umbrella organisation Table for Democracy and called for the general strike.

The club are off for the worldwide break this week, but said via statement on Monday that none of the teams would train as part of the "standstill".

FC Barcelona said it would take part in the strike, adding that it would close its headquarters and that none of its professional or youth teams would train.

Catholic leaders voiced pleas for peace after a Catalonian regional referendum vote on secession from Spain drew a strong police reaction. He's the co-author of an article in The Nation headlined "Have Spain and Catalonia Reached a Point of No Return?"

Barcelona star Gerard Pique could quit Spain's national team following Sunday's violent scenes in the city during Catalonia's unofficial independence referendum.

On Saturday a Catalan government spokesman said at least four police officers had entered the centre in Barcelona which controls the regional government's telecommunications and IT and were expected to stay there for two days.

He then underlined "the crown's unswerving commitment to the Spanish constitution and to the unity of Spain".
