'Blade Runner 2049' Review: A Magnificent Experience

Jared Leto as Niander Wallace

Sharing whisky with a mangy dog, he brings a lifetime of experience to his character, and briefly turns Blade Runner 2049 into a completely different movie.

As to the those big questions.

After 35 long years, finally, someone had thought of making the sequel to Ridley Scott's cult classic, Blade Runner.

I am delighted to say that the answer is a lot closer to "yes" than "no".

Back in 2019 Los Angeles had a problem with four rogue replicants that had started trouble on a satellite colony.

That doesn't make it flawless, of course.

Despite its narrative shortcoming, Blade Runner 2049 deserves to be seen on the big screen. And certainly "Blade Runner 2049" arrives at a moment of intense discussion about developments in robotics and artificial intelligence and the implications these breakthroughs have for our economy and our collective morality. But Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve put the actor at ease when the two hopped on the phone, James told GameSpot in an interview leading up to the movie's release.

If you watched Ryan Gosling host Saturday Night Live this past weekend, you'll know that he's not very good at staying in character.

Actually, they probably already have replicants, but otherwise Ridley Scott's 1982 dystopian drama was a bit ahead of itself in predictive terms. Like Ford's Rick Deckard, K is a Blade Runner seeking out-modeled replicants to "retire".

It's easy to forget, now that it's the film that launched a thousand thinkpieces, how hard Blade Runner once was. Every subsequent frame is an exotic tapestry of light, shadow, metal, and stone so inconceivably dense in composition as to defy comprehension at a glance from the eyes of ordinary, organically grown humans.

Wright, an icy, steely actress seemingly born for the world of "Blade Runner", is speaking to her replicant detective whose name is his serial number: KDC-3-7 - or "K", for short (Ryan Gosling). Gosling's best roles rely on either his bottomless, low-key charm or his alarming, eerie capacity for blankness.

With Blade Runner 2049 hitting theaters this end of the week, fans will at last get the opportunity to see the exceedingly acclaimed science fiction continuation for themselves. It's a performance that borrows a lot from Gosling's work in Drive, swapping a silver scorpion jacket for a futuristic trench coat with a fur-lined collar, but it definitely works.

Before the screening, critics were read a personal note - a plea, really - from Villeneuve to not reveal too much of the film in our reviews, a request with which I will happily comply. From the top down, Villeneuve crafted a worthy sequel to one of cinema's most divisive stories.

Replicants were blamed for these calamities, but an unlikely corporate saviour emerged: Blind industrialist Niander Wallace (Jared Leto), the Elon Musk of his day, whose genius and innovations handily solved both the energy crisis and the starvation, greatly inflating his ego in the process.

One of the most fun and/or heartbreaking aspects of the new film is K's relationship with Joi (Ana de Armas), a woman who exists purely as a hologram - and yet so much more.

Blade Runner has always been a nakedly political story.

You have read about it in some of the global reviews, and yeah, it's true! Its plot, like Blade Runner's, feels gratifyingly self-contained, with no transparent attempts to set up a series of sequels or spinoffs. And is the dream of being a chosen one an expression of solidarity for the people you hope to save, or an act of vanity that separates you from the people you secretly hope that you're superior to? It's not much, but it's there if you're looking for it. In the bowels of the city, both replicant and human prostitutes offer sexual services devoid of emotion or connection for the right price.
