41% of Android devices vulnerable to "exceptionally devastating" hack

Wifi WPA2 security cracked: Android & Linux most vulnerable, but iOS and macOS too [Video]

The good news, however, is that the attack only works if the hacker is within range of the Wi-Fi network.

Attackers can decrypt packets on WPA2 networks by forcing the re-use of a cryptographic nonce with a key already in use by manipulating and replaying cryptographic handshake messages.

A "severe" security flaw with home WiFi networks has been reported that potentially puts anyone using a wireless router at risk of being hacked.

The flaw is so widespread that confirmation from US Homeland Security's Cyber Emergency Unit US-CERT already began warning businesses that the bug existed two months ago was revealed by ZDNet.

An attack may also be a challenge for hackers execute. A dedicated website has even been setup by the researchers to provide information on the incoming problem - https://www.krackattacks.com.

Researchers this week published information about a newfound, serious weakness in WPA2 - the security standard that protects all modern Wi-Fi networks.

As far as we can determine, all the KRACK attacks involve reused keystream material accessed by "rewinding" crypto settings and thus encrypting different data with the same keystream.

This means things like credit card numbers, passwords, photos, and more can all be intercepted through this Krack Attack. It's also very important to know that the hack can affect all protected Wi-fi networks. An attacker might also be able to inject and manipulate data.

"It is likely that some products, particularly Android smartphones, and Wi-Fi routers, will never be fixed". Therefore, any correct implementation of WPA2 is likely affected.

(Client to AP) You're right, we have. Well. yes and no.

Wireless security has a fundamental flaw that allows hackers with malicious intent to enter your device, which can only be combated by applying a number of proper practices to your network.

The weakness isn't limited to Android however, with Apple, Windows and Mac devices all said to be susceptible. What follows is a short rundown on what exactly is at stake here, who's most at-risk from this vulnerability, and what organizations and individuals can do about it.

While he acknowledged that some of the attack scenarios discussed in his research are impractical to pull off, he said the bottom line is that you should still "update all your devices once security updates are available".

It has been found effective on operating systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and various types of software used in Wi-Fi routers. Suffice to say, keep an eye out for the latest patches and deploy them. That means that the attacker can essentially join the network and pretend to be a client or the access point, depending on the type of access they want.

The solution to this problem is to immediately update the device as soon as a security patch becomes available.

In the United States, the Department of Homeland Security issued an advisory warning users to update their devices as soon as possible.

Actually, there are several attacks of a similar sort discussed in the paper that introduced KRACK, so they're more properly known as the KRACK Attacks.
