Storm Blasts East Coast with Blizzard Conditions

'Bomb cyclone' hits US East Coast energy, power supply

The massive bomb cyclone that hit the East Coast on Thurday has already left over 17 inches of snow in some areas, bringing with it hurricane-force winds and never-seen-before levels of flooding.

The storm is caused by a rapid and sharp drop of barometric pressure known as "bombogenesis", and is exceptionally rare.

A brutal storm is wreaking havoc in various parts of the United States, extending a cold snap that has been linked to at least 17 deaths.

More recently, in February 2017, a bomb cyclone hit the northeast of the States leading to snow of eight inches deep every hour, according to the NOAA. Blizzard conditions are also expected in several other states, including New York's Long Island.

Blizzard-like conditions are set to hit a huge area of the east coast, from North Carolina to ME, with New England expected to be one of the worst-hit areas.

Nearby cities include Savannah, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, may also get some snow, though estimates are now closer to 1 to 3 inches for those areas, according to AccuWeather's forecast.

"Nice and quiet weather will continue through Saturday".

According to Sanders and Gyakum's paper, bombogenesis is predominantly a cold-season event and occurs over water.

Late on Wednesday, a baggage vehicle and two sleeper cars on an Amtrak train traveling from Miami to NY, with 311 passengers aboard, derailed as it was slowly backing into a station in Savannah, Georgia.

"It's nearly impossible to clear roads when you have those high wind gusts, because as soon as you clear the road the snow, the wind literally just brings the snow back on to the road".

The arctic blast could make temperatures feel as low as minus 15 degrees from Philly to Beantown on Friday and make residents of states like Maryland and Virginia shiver from temps ranging from 10 degrees to 15 degrees.

"We can not and will not order people up in trucks to fix lines when the winds are too high", Malloy said.

Almost 500 members of the National Guard were activated along the East Coast to assist with emergency response, including 200 in NY state, the U.S. Department of Defense said in a statement. The storm was seen rapidly increasing in density as more of the US landmass got steadily covered by the coldest blizzard to hit the South Eastern coast in over 30 years. Many schools are closed or have delayed openings Friday as road crews try to clear local streets.

A 3-foot (0.9-metre) tidal surge flooded the area around Boston's historic Long Wharf with icy seawater. National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Hurley says mid-Atlantic states can expect temperatures in the teens while the Northeast's coastal areas will see temperatures in the single digits.

"We do know that the winds out there have been ferocious, and our seasoned coastal residents who are used to powerful storms and Nor'easters aren't really used to the blizzard conditions", he told reporters.
