Trump's Vulgar Comments on Africa, Haiti Shameful — UN Official

'I'm not a racist': Trump's denial after 's***hole countries' controversy

The African Union, a group representing the continent's countries, and African ambassadors to the United Nations sharply denounced U.S. President Donald Trump's reference to African nations as "sh-holes" and called on him to retract his statement and apologize.

The African ambassadors issued the statement late Friday following an emergency meeting after Trump used vulgar language to reject an immigration bill, asking why the USA would take in more people from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa. "And we'd have to get pitchforks and chase him out of the White House".

"People who suggest merit-based may inherently favour white, northern Europeans - that is inherently racist", said Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Trump denies using the word "shithole" including towards Haiti, which is marking the eighth anniversary of a devastating natural disaster.

Trump's remarks prompted criticisms from around the world, including some of the countries named.

Nevertheless, aware the USA is still a powerful military and economic power, the AU statement called for continued strategic partnership with the US.

His comments drew a chorus of condemnation inside the United States and internationally, especially in Africa.

Before Trump, the most prominent one was Alabama Sen.

"If the reports are true, he should take them back".

In Senegal's capital Dakar, administrator Idrissa Fall said "we can not really say that he (Trump) is wrong".

Several Democratic lawmakers slammed Trump for his comments and described them as racist comment. Their views haven't changed much in the two decades Pew has asked the question, but the views of Democrats have: In 1994, only 32 percent of Democrats said immigrants strengthen the country, but by 2016 that figure had climbed to 78 percent. Trump has tried to deny the words, but according to Lemon, there's no denying it. "Almost no one coming from the Dominican Republic to the United States is coming here because they have a proven skill that will benefit us and would indicate their likely success in our society", he said on the Senate floor in 2006. "This is even more hurtful given the historical reality of just how many Africans arrived in the United States as slaves, and also terribly surprising as the United States remains a massively positive example as just how migration can give birth to a nation". This is great news to foreign dictators, who want their people to believe that we were lying about equality and freedom. "I want to stop the massive inflow of drugs".

In a statement, the Haitian government expressed its shock and outrage.

In sum, although the Clintons promised to take a prominent role in Haiti's rebuild following the 2010 natural disaster, the country remains in shambles as Clinton Foundation donors and family members received massive contracts.

Moise was expected to lodge a formal protest.

"For once, we are all on the same page", an ambassador told AFP.

U.S. officials are concerned that the episode may provoke protests in Haiti because commemorations have been planned to mark the anniversary.

Trump's reportedly crude outburst against migrants from the African continent and Haiti have set off a firestorm of global rebuke.

Trump has been seeking to end temporary protection status of people from certain countries.

It further called for the US President to issue an apology for the hurtful remarks not only to Africans but people of African descent across the globe.

Many US media outlets reported the comments on Thursday, quoting witnesses or people briefed on the meeting.

Some of Trump's defenders, thinking they're oh so clever, have been asking liberals, "So would you rather move to Haiti or Norway? Huh?"

Trump was reported in December to have made similarly disparaging comments a year ago about people who had received United States visas in 2017.

Graham, who attended the meeting where Trump was said to have used the profanity, did not confirm it in his remarks.
