Minneapolis High School Students Walk Out to Support Florida Shooting Victims

Next stop for school shooting survivors: the Florida Capitol

The leadership class at Western Albemarle High School set up a table during lunch Wednesday, February 21, where students could write cards to send to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

About 100 students from the high school made the 400-mile trip on three buses. "It seemed nearly heartless how they immediately pushed the button to say no". Among the speakers was a survivor named Florence Yared who had these words for lawmakers: "To Congress... you have the power to change things".

On the windy evening, 17 electronic candles were held while the names of those killed were read aloud. Students from the massacre were in attendance during the vote and spoke out about the outcome. "Should students choose to do so, they will be suspended from school for 3 days and face all the consequences that come along with an out of school suspension".

And on February 21, CAPA students walked half a mile from their Downtown Pittsburgh campus to Market Square for an hour-long protest, which called for changes to gun-control laws.

Moving forward, he hoped the protests would lead to change.

Hundreds of high school students from Parkland were multiplied many times over, with several thousand people showing up on the front lawn of the old Capitol with their strongest message: to ban assault-style rifles. At one point, they stood silent for 17 minutes to honor the victims in last week's attack. He felt compelled to join in because he wants to see an end to the mass shootings in schools.

"The only thought on my mind is, 'I'm going to die, '" said Marjory Stoneman Douglas student Lorenzo Prado.

"There should be gun laws that keep people from getting their hands on these types of weapons that can bring harm to us", he said.

One sign outside the capitol building in Tallahassee read "Remember the men who value the NRA over children's lives" and then listed Republicans in Florida's Congressional delegation, the Associated Press reported.

He said he feels the American people are not being represented due to the "oligarchy" and corruption in Washington, D.C. "If this is something they want to do, that is their right".

"We have to go to them and show them how loud our voices can get". I have a video on my social media of me shooting an AR-15.
