Although activity has decreased, federal health officials say they expect the current season to last for several more weeks, potentially into April.

"Could very well be at this time previous year there were more cases or less but those numbers can change", he said.

Meanwhile, state Department of Public Health leaders, at, noted that, for the reporting week that ended February 17, flu-related deaths reached 17 for people younger than 65, with 29 outbreaks and remained widespread in all 58 counties.

Hospitalizations were still greatly associated with influenza A infection; 83.4% of all hospitalized flu cases were caused by influenza A.

According to Peel public health, 220 children between the ages of zero to four have been diagnosed with the flu this season and 618 seniors, aged 65 and older. "We will continue to ensure availability and affordability of the flu vaccine, and I encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of the expanded access and get vaccinated".

When it comes to the nasty H3N2 flu strain dominating this season, the CDC said the vaccine has been 25 percent effective in patients of all ages, but better in young children. Moreover, the flu shot offers substantial protection against H1N1, and moderate protection against influenza B, the CDC said. The hospitalization rate for people 50-64 years was 53.4 per 100,000.

But the percentage of outpatient visits related to influenza-like illnesses fell to 6.4% in the most recent data (down from 7.5% a week ago).

At the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting earlier this week, CDC researchers updated committee members on this influenza season.

According to the unit, Acting National Epidemiologist, Doctor Gemma Cherry, has reassured St Lucians that the country is not experiencing the same strain of influenza. "It's never too late for vaccination".

This is especially important because of the possible peak in influenza B cases later this flu season.

Jarrell said flu statistics aren't reported to the counties until later in the year. If you do get sick, cover your coughs and sneezes, and avoid other people as much as possible.
