Sony's new flagship phones come with an updated design

The Sony Xperia XZ2 sheds the boxy design we have grown on to see in almost all Xperia branded devices.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact ditches the XZ2's glass back for plastic and has a 5.0-inch FullHD+ display (covered by Gorilla Glass 5) which also supports HDR and most of Sony's display technologies. We're not sure what kind of surprise Sony is talking about, unless they're referring to their flagship phone in which thanks to the leaks and rumors, isn't much of a surprise anymore.

The Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact are typical Sony fare: sleek, if somewhat dated design, great specs, and a slew of multimedia and imaging features. We've never really been sure why that's something you'd want to do but if it is, the good news is you can now do it with both the rear and the front-facing camera.

Making a return to the XZ2 is Sony's 3D Capture technology.

The XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will be mostly the same, albeit with a few differences.

Both the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 have minimal bezels up front, a metal frame and a rear mounted fingerprint sensor. The two phones were rumored to be coming to MWC but with the leaks, we now have a better idea on what the company is planning to unveil there. So far, Sony hasn't joined the likes of Apple, Samsung or Huawei in offering a dual camera on its phones.

As the name suggests, the XZ2 Compact looks just like the regular-sized XZ2, only smaller. The new camera tech will be used in the company's upcoming high-end smartphone, which could be named either the Xperia XZ2 Pro or the Xperia XZ2 Premium. Both have will be available in March. For the front-facing camera, the company is using a 5MP wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture that records 1080p videos. Wireless charging will also be baked into these two phones from Sony and Blass even shared the image of the charging dock on his Twitter account (included above). They both can support microSD carts up to 400 GB, pus boasting 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage. It still has the Snapdragon 845, though, as well as the 4GB RAM, 19MP camera, fingerprint reader, and stereo speakers.

Most of the attention, however, will be on Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. It fits snugly in your palm, although it feels a little chunkier than its non-Compact counterpart, and can be picked up in either Black, White Silver, Moss Green or Coral Pink. Android 8 Oreo will come as standard, but with Sony's slightly old-fashioned skin, which is a bit clunky and jammed with Sony's own duplicate apps.
