Jaguar unveils its first electric auto - the I-Pace SUV

The cabin is spacious and comes equipped with a ton of features

The Jaguar I-Pace's direct rival is the Tesla Model X, another all-electric SUV, so the firm chose to pitch its new auto against its competitor in a drag race.

Jaguar states that the overall design of the Jaguar I-Pace is developed using physics. Jaguar Lead Designer Ian Callum credits the EV powertrain for allowing the company the freedom to translate the lofty ambition of the concept into a production-ready form. Making good on a promise to bring an electric SUV to market this year, Jaguar has formally revealed the production I-Pace.

The design is virtually unchanged from the i-Pace Concept, and although we admit to a little less than outright enthusiasm for its slightly odd proportions when the Concept arrived, it's grown on us. The twin electric motors - which send power to all four wheels - are capable of generating a combined maximum output of 394bhp and 696Nm of torque.

The vehicle will have 240 miles of range per charge and be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. I-Pace also works with standard 7kW home chargers and will be fully compatible with 100kW chargers as the technology is rolled out across the UK. By placing the battery pack between the axels and extensive use of aluminum, the I-Pace has a new flawless 50/50 weight distribution.

It's not just fast in a straight line, either, the EV has a light, stiff body structure, torsional rigidity of 36kNm/degrees, flawless 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity to ensure engaging driving dynamics, agile handling and a comfortable ride.

An air suspension provides a smooth ride and sports vehicle handling.

And to prove the point about its new EV, Jaguar screened a shoot out between the I-PACE and two Tesla Model X vehicles during the launch of its first all-electric model. While the sporty, cab-forward exterior was influenced by the C-X75 supercar, the interior is focused on space and comfort.

After much anticipation, Jaguar has unveiled the I-Pace, its first all-electric vehicle which it hopes will kill off Tesla.

Additionally, the I-Pace will be the first Jaguar to get over-the-air software updates.

Inside, the I-Pace is loaded with kit, including Jaguar's new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. There's also a 12-inch interactive driver display and colour head-up display.

Artificial intelligence is used to predict the car's range based on your commute, the weather, battery charge status, and your driving style as measured on previous journeys.

The Jaguar I-Pace is available to order now, with prices starting from £63,495 in the United Kingdom (around US$87,500) before any government incentives are applied. Yet it struggles to match the I-Pace for acceleration and braking performance.
