Sanders: Trump will 'continue to support the Second Amendment'

President Donald Trump speaks in the Cabinet Room of the White House Wednesday Feb. 28 2018 in Washington during a meeting with members of Congress to discuss school and community safety

After Wednesday's meeting, Toomey spokesman Steve Kelly said the senator "has demonstrated that he is not afraid of the NRA or any other special interest group", and that Toomey has not received NRA donations since being elected to the Senate in 2010.

After all, past attempts by presidents to take the lead on gun control reforms - I'm thinking of Barack Obama in the wake of Sandy Hook, in particular - have largely failed. And she said that while Trump "conceptually" supports higher age requirements to purchase certain weapons, "he also knows there's not a lot of broad support for that".

Alongside his plan to arm teachers, Trump has repeatedly said that violent video games may act as a root cause of school shootings. It even took some Republicans by surprise.

Yet as positive as the meeting sounded, Democrats warned there is reason for skepticism.

"Let's think about how ridiculous that is", Toomey said.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer urged President Donald Trump on Friday to follow his gut on gun restrictions he has recently backed, after the powerful US gun lobby said the Republican president and vice president do not want gun control. "We're not ditching any constitutional protections simply because the last person the President talked to today doesn't like them", said Nebraska Republican Senator Ben Sasse.

Trump pressed Republican Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania on whether he supported raising the age to buy rifles.

Ryan supports the House version of the Cornyn bill that the Republican majority paired with a bill - opposed by Democrats - requiring states to honor any other state's concealed gun carry permits.

"They are still kind of working out some of the final pieces of that legislation".

Cornyn, who sat next to Trump for the meeting, described it as "surreal".

"He wants to help move the ball down the field, so he's going to keep having calls with a number of different members on how we can do that".

On Wednesday, when told by Sen.

"I'm not saying I want this or I want that".

But Trump will still play a critical role in determining whether enough Republicans are willing to come to the table on guns, Manchin and others said.

It all fell apart quickly. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) pitched a bipartisan proposal to give Dreamers legal status, ramp up border security and make some tweaks to the legal immigration system. "The outcry from high school kids across the country, that's contributed to this discussion as well".

Sanders said President Donald Trump confirmed it yesterday in remarks from the Oval Office.

The issue here seems to be that Trump doesn't really have any strong opinions on this issue, so he changes depending on his whims and his audience. "The White House has to send a proposal to Congress".

He also stunned lawmakers from both parties by suggesting that he would support measures to allow the authorities to seize guns from mentally ill people or those who could pose a danger without first following due process, like appearing before a judge. McConnell had been preparing to push ahead with an incremental proposal from Sens. I never thought he'd go there, but not only did he go there, he went way past there to a place no one had a ticket for. Trump's preferred measure got only 39.

On Wednesday, Trump insisted on more, cutting against the grain of GOP orthodoxy on the Second Amendment and playing right into Democrats' talking points that Fix NICs wasn't enough on gun control.

"Unsurprising, but no less revolting", tweeted Matt Bennett, a longtime gun control advocate and top official at a center-left Washington think tank, in response to Coxs comment.

But Trump said at the televised session on Wednesday: "You have to be very, very powerful on background checks".

"I'm going to be watching very carefully what the White House does in the coming days".
