OR governor signs gun control law

Nikolas Cruz indicted on 17 counts of murder in Parkland school shooting

The Senate passed a version of the bill on Monday and now the House is taking it up for what could be the final vote.

Almost all classroom teachers are expressly excluded from participating in a compromise aimed at winning support from some Democrats and Scott, a staunch NRA ally who nevertheless is opposed to arming teachers. "I'm going to take my time and read the bill", said Scott, a Naples Republican.

That unhappy comparison fell Wednesday to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, whose visit to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was marked by criticism from students, an aborted press conference, and a stark comparison to the star power and warm reception enjoyed by National Basketball Association player Dwyane Wade, who visited shortly afterwards.

In the letter, Romano wrote "I intend to advocate for gun safety and mental health reform after my release in 2021". Doing so would mean calling the legislature back into session, leading to more amendments and back-and-forth that "wouldn't end well".

"My community was rocked".

While I sympathize so much with the parents who lost their children because somebody decided they wanted to go on a shooting rampage, I can not say it enough: We don't need gun control. And while some oppose the bill, others believe it is at least a first step toward gun safety.

Many Americans expressed relief following a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last month because that particular massacre became a tipping point in efforts to spur response to gun violence in America.

A spokeswoman for Florida Governor Rick Scott said earlier this week that he had not yet decided whether to support the new measures.

How can we expect our teachers to carry that responsibility? "This time must be different and we demand action", said Mr Petty, reading from the group statement.

Petty's 14-year-old daughter, Alaina, was killed in the Feb 14 shooting, along with 13 schoolmates and three staff members.

If just one more senator had voted no instead of yes on Monday evening, the bill would have died.

"I went to college to educate children, not because I wanted to kill another human".

Inside, Democrats filed 90 amendments, all of which are expected to fail on party lines.

It would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, require a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases, and ban the sale or possession of bump-fire stocks.

The bill also includes the Marshall program, which allows employees who were trained by law enforcement to carry guns inside schools. Other exceptions would be made for teachers with law enforcement or military backgrounds, and teachers in a Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps program.

"I'm proud to sign this bill, making OR to the first state to take action to prevent senseless gun violence since the tragedy in Parkland, Florida", Gov. Kate Brown (D) said, the Hill reports.
