Tariff exemptions possible for USA military partners

Gary Cohn to resign as WH economic adviser

Brussels has reminded Trump that tit-for-tat trade measures deepened the Great Depression in the 1930s and in the 2000s cost thousands of United States jobs when Washington imposed tariffs on European steel.

Trump signed an order for the 25 per cent tariffs on steel imports and 10 per cent for aluminium at the White House on Thursday to counter cheap imports, especially from China, which he described as "an assault on our country".

"The misuse of the "national security exception" clause by the U".

Trump has promised to cut ties to trade deals considered unfavorable to United States interests as part of his campaign pledge.

Steelworkers from Pittsburgh, some with hard hats in hand, stood just behind the president as he made the announcement.

Trump is imposing the tariffs using a rarely employed trade provision known as Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, claiming a national security rationale for protecting the domestic steel and aluminium industries, reports CNN.

"Exempting Canada and Mexico is a good first step, and I urge the White House to go further to narrow these tariffs so they hit the intended target - and not US workers, businesses, and families", House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said.

China which produces half the world's steel described the move as a "serious attack on normal worldwide trade order".

Republicans are especially frustrated because the White House has continued to keep them completely in the dark. So did House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, who has been the GOP's point person on this issue in the House.

But despite intense resistance, Trump went ahead with his decision.

"I have a feeling we're going to make a deal on NAFTA", Trump said at the White House alongside a group of steelworkers, citing the "unique nature of our relationship with Canada and Mexico".

"I think the knee jerk reaction is that any price increase is not welcome", said Valley farmer Jeff Slaven.

Other countries such as China, South Korea, Japan, Germany and Brazil may be hit by these tariffs, according to the New York Times. The tariffs, to take effect in 15 days, are created to reinvigorate those industries.

Navarro said the move will help strengthen US industries that have a $70 billion trade deficit.

American steel and aluminium workers have always been betrayed, but "that betrayal is now over", Mr Trump said. "WTO rules include a specific call out for national security and national defense".

While Mr Trump has promised to be flexible on tariff negotiations, fears of a global trade war remain. A White House official said Trump was referencing an ongoing investigation of China in which the US trade representative is studying whether Chinese intellectual property rules are "unreasonable or discriminatory" to American business.

"We also make steel for the American military program, so it's doubly absurd".

"Today I'm defending America's national security by placing tariffs on foreign imports of steel and aluminium", he said. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, in an op-ed.

"Just exempting NAFTA trading partners is not enough", one top GOP aide told Cordes.

"Dialogue is always the prime option of the European Union", Malmstroem said, adding that Brussels was "counting on being excluded" from the new duties. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., on CBS News. Great country. Long-term partner.

Immediately after President Trump unveiled his controversial trade tariffs Thursday, one Republican senator urged Congress to overturn them and another GOP lawmaker blasted the move as a tax hike. "Congress can not be complicit as the administration courts economic disaster". He's been a Democrat, an independent and a Republican.
