'American Idol' Reboot Katy Perry's No Simon Cowell ... During 1st Disaster Audition

Luke Bryan Katy Perry and Lionel Richie

It's time for the auditions because there's no season of American Idol without great talent and maybe some so-so talent too, but don't expect any bad auditions this year.

When "American Idol" first aired in 2002, it was subtitled "The Search for a Superstar", and when the show premieres Sunday night that's just what judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will be doing.

"It's the dawn of a new era here at 'American Idol, ' " says Seacrest, dubbed by ABC "the heart and soul of the show". The stigma of music competition series (not to mention their failure to create big stars in recent years) may actively deter potential superstars from considering the show. Monday's two-hour episode, also airing at 8 p.m., follows judges Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan as they listen to auditions in New York, Savannah, Los Angeles and New Orleans.

Luke and Katy have dubbed Lionel "Dad", but what's the story behind the nickname? And then you've got O.J. Simpson. "They are so out of control".

Is Ryan Seacrest going to be there?

It's been almost two years since we heard someone say.

The one thing missing? And when he was, he spent his time plugging Disney or giving one-liners. The show can (and must), however, make certain improvements moving forward.

"He's the through-through", Perry chimed in. All three judges loved Dyxie's performance and gave her a Golden Ticket for 2026.

After an audition by Ron Bultongez, an entrepreneur from Plano, Texas, who originally came to the US from the Congo, Bryan shouts, "Ron from the Congo, that's your nickname!"

Kentucky native Layla Spring brought her little sister Dyxie into her audition in front of the judges. During the season premiere, viewers will watch aspiring singers from cities across the United States try their luck on the show. Noah is from Royal, Arkansas, and he's 18 years old.

"I was so shy as a 15-year-old". I'm very cut and dry sometimes.

After Perry asked her if she writes her own songs, Turner opted to sing an original called "21st Century Machine". So, all the things that I was going to put in my master class, I'm actually going to be able to tell the 'students, ' in person. "I can take it down, dumba**es", she hissed while walking out of her audition. I think there's been a lot of talk about how is this show different.

Sussett says she learned English during her first few months here and started working in area restaurants to make ends meet.

Whether it was her flashy outfits or her vibrant personality, Perry made sure her presence was noticed and in the process became absolutely beloved by the contestants.

Sussett says she was at a local karaoke event past year when members of the local Top-40 cover band Higher Ground noticed her and eventually hired her.

"It was an eye-opening experience", he said.
